Safe Water

The Safe Water for Families Program provides BioSand filters to rural families living in rural communities in collaboration with Canadian and Colombian Rotary Clubs. The families receiving filters have no piped water and use rain water or water from ponds as their water source. At least 50% of acute diarrhea is caused by contaminated water, so the filter enables families to experience a significant improvement in health.

To date in April of 2023, the Safe Water Program has provided 11K families with filters in departamentos of Colombia as shown in the map. We thank the Rotary Clubs in these regions for their enthusiastic and continuing dedication to the program.  The cost of a filter is USD 110. This cost includes community training in filter maintenance and in hygiene, and follow-up visits.

CAPD water filter projects are organized through community groups as well as Canadian & Colombian Rotary Clubs. The pictures below are a demonstration of a project organized by community leaders. In all projects, the community receives training in water filter maintenance and hygiene before receiving a filter for their home. Each filter recipient receives follow-up visits to provide additional training and to ensure correct filter use.

This is an example of Colombian Rotary involvement and their enthusiasm for water projects. Club members pose after unloading was complete and the journey home begins.

Members of the community and Rotary members regroup after unloading the truck with the filters and all if their components.
